Race Car Party....

Our son turned 5 this year. He's into race cars in a big way so I ran with the idea for his first real kids party! Here are the decorations. Checkered flags I printed out on my printer and hung on string. More flags with numbers that I attached to giant yellow straws and taped to each of the chairs. It was pretty simple but look great I thought.

I made each kid their very own, personalized race car driver lunch kit. I used craft bridal boxes and then attached some checkered paper and their names. Each lunch kit included a sandwich, cheese string, yogurt, juice box and bag of chips. The chips were the most popular.

For the activity I kept it pretty simple. I bought a race car cookie cutter and made a bunch of sugar cookies. The kids got to decorate till their hearts content. It was messy but they seemed to enjoy themselves. Here's the birthday boy stuffing his face.

The race car birthday cake. It was tricky to make but I think it turned out okay. The back had red candy for lights and a chocolate spoiler. The Oreo wheels were my favourite. Yum!

I bought some stripped bags from HeyYoYo on Etsy to use for the goodies bags. I filled them with anything race car I could get my hands one, stickers, note pads, crayons, candy, etc.

Our son was a happy boy!

4-TEE....

It was my husbands birthday on the weekend. I didn't want to get too themey with the party but I did make him a golf cake. He turned 40. I was feeling silly so I put "4-TEE" on the flag. My mother would be so proud : )

Inspired by this cake.

Easter Bunny Cookies....

We made Easter Bunny cookies for the preschool party tomorrow. I like the marshmallow tails. : )

Also just a quick note to apologize for my inconsistency lately. Life has gotten busy and there's more to come and unfortunately the blog is suffering. Just know what I'm here and I will still be posting it just won't be as consistent as I would like. I hope you're all doing well and a huge thank you for reading my blog and for all of your wonderful support! : )

Sesame Street Birthday Fun....

Our daughter turned 2 on Saturday so we have a Sesame Street (heavy on the Elmo) themed birthday party for her. Here's some pictures of the festivities.

* I found some Sesame Street confetti at the dollar store. I glued tooth picks to the Elmos so I could use them as cupcake toppers. I then glued toothpicks to the Bert's, Ernie's, Oscar's and Cookie Monster's and used them as foot skewers. The kids loved these! I also used the round Elmo confetti's for the centre of the paper pinwheels (not really sure what to call them) that hung over the table.
* I used pink and red tissue paper to make the paper pinwheels (see above about proper name) and we hung them from the light over the dinning room table.
* I made some Cookie Monster bag toppers which I attached to baggies with cookies in them for the party favors. I put these inside an Elmo Easter basket I found at a local store.
* I rounded up the little Sesame Street figures we have around the house and used those on the dessert table and put the Elmo on top of the cake along with a #2 candle my parents had.
* We had sandwiches, fruit, veggies and chips for lunch along with bottled water and sparkling fruit juices to drink. For dessert, a mini cake for the birthday girl, cupcakes and cookies (for cookie monster of course).

Lunch, cake, then presents. It was a great party and our daughter looked at everything yelling, "Elmo! Zoe! Ernie! Oscar, etc." which was so much fun.

Hope you enjoy the pics! : )

Superheros....

Okay I'm finally getting this post up. On my husbands side of the family we do a gift exchange every year. Well Christmas of December 2010 (yup, I said 2010) we had my sister in law, her husband and our two adorable nephews, Kaalam and Xander. I decided to get all creative and make them masks and capes. Fast forward to July of 2011 (yup, 2011) and I finally got the caps and masks finished and sent off to them. I'm happy to report that although the gift was over 6 months late they were thrilled with it none the less.

I found templates for both the masks and the capes in this post on the blog Living Locurto. I bought stiff felt for the masks and cut out the boys initials and some lighting bolts and stars to attach (I used fabric glue). I then sewed some elastic to the backs using my sons head as a template. For the capes I bought some felt which I folded in half. I then cut out the capes on the fold and then sewed more initials, lightening bolts and stars onto them to personalize each one. I think they turned out pretty cute!

So fast forward to March of 2012 and I'm finally posting about my crafty adventure. Wow, I'm a slacker! Hope you enjoyed!

A huge thanks to my sister in law Amy for taking pictures of her boys for me to share. : )

The Photo Wall....

The photo wall is done, the photo wall is done! This past Saturday marked our 1 year anniversary of being in our new house. I can hardly believe it's been one year. Not only does the time go by so fast but the house still looks bare in many rooms. We still need to buy furniture and hang a lot (I mean a lot!) of pictures. I was bound and determined that by the one year mark I was at least going to get something up on the walls in our dining room and I did it!

It took a long time to decide what to do on this wall. It's a bit strange as it has these two high, square windows in it. Finally after seeing many photo walls on Pinterest and loving them I decided to give one a try. Now I'm not going to lie, it was hard! Way harder than you'd think. In fact I'm not sure I'd attempt another one but maybe I just need to give it some time. Lol.
Step 1: trace the frames you're going to use onto craft paper and then tape the craft paper to your wall until you come up with a pattern you like (the paper in the above picture stayed there a good month). I found it helped to lay the frames out on the floor or table as I was taping the paper to walls to help me visually see what the frames would look like especially since I was using different colours, types and sizes.

Step 2: after many, many, many trails finally decide on the pattern you like best whether it's because you're too tired to go on or because you actually like it, at some point you just need to decide. Here's our winner (well almost).

Step 3: Lay the frames out on the floor to make sure you like how they look and so you remember what goes where as you start to hang them (finding time to do this when your children won't step on or move said frames is another story).

Step 4: figure out which pictures you want to use inside the frames. This may take awhile especially if you use the standard picture sizes in your printing program only to find out they've been cropped too small and the pictures don't fit in the frames/matts (argh!). Keep going until you're finally happy. As you'll see in the picture below I was hanging the frames as I was putting the pictures in them.

Step 5: Hang your frames! The wall slowly coming together. Now this took a bit of time as well because I decided to use a new product that would keep me from having to put too many holes in my wall (being that it's a brand new house it hurt a wee bit every time I hammered a nail into the beautiful, smooth wall). I used nails for about half the frames but the other half I used...

Have you heard of these? I love them! Love them! Basically it's like velcro for your walls except when you take the adhesive stripes off your walls they don't leave any marks what so ever! Love!

They're Command Hanging Strips. Basically you sandwich two strips together, remove the paper from one side and mount onto your frame. You then clean the wall with rubbing alcohol, remove the paper from the other side of your strips and position the frame on the wall where you want it. You then press firmly for 30 seconds and then carefully, from the bottom, remove the frame from the wall. One strip will remain on the wall and the other on your frame. You then have to wait an hour before putting your frame back on the wall (this is why it takes a bit longer than nails). After an hour snap your frame back onto the strip that's on the wall and that sucker ain't going anywhere!

And now the finished product. It's not perfect which bothers me. The spacing was hard to get exactly right and a few frames are slightly croaked but honestly these are more things I see because I did it. Most people that look at the wall don't even notice. Thank goodness!

I'm pretty happy with it and it's nice to have some family pictures up on the wall finally. Now only 20 or so more wall to go!

I love lists....

2012 Calendar from the amazing shop yumalum on Etsy.

I'm not much for New Years resolutions and I'm definitely not a goal setter. Just never been my thing but I am a list maker. I love lists and they're sort of like goals right? Well below is my list of things to get done before baby #3 arrives. We'll see how many of these actually get accomplished. I'll keep you posted.
1. Update first two kids photo albums to present day
2. Work on and finish building my craftedbylindy website
3. Make curtains for all three kids rooms
4. Organize and declutter the basement (including digging out baby clothes)
5. Set up babies room

Oh the Drama.....

So this time last week I found myself in the middle of some unexpected drama. After 4.5 years and a lot of use my printer broke. Not died but broke. The little piece right here (see below) that adjusts to the size of paper I'm printing on broke off right in the middle of an order. At first I thought all would be fine as the slider for the paper gauge was still intact but it turns out that this little piece also helps feed the paper into the printer. So alas I was hooped!

So what did I end up doing all week? Shopping, buying and setting up this bad boy! I now have a brand new, shiny printer to call my own. It's a Canon, the same brand as my last two printers (I'm a fan!), it's all decked out with fancy buttons and seems to print like a charm (knock on wood).

So I am back to being able to make these (and by these I mean stationery in general) and all is right with the world. Drama over.....I hope!

Anything unexpected happen to you recently?
